The American Flag is a symbol known by an entire nation, yet the basic information of it is commonly misinformed. First this paper will talk about the flag in its early stages and its creation, then it will talk about the flag around the 1800s and early 1900s, lastly it'll talk about the flag in its recent years. This paper will bring light to some common misconceptions and give a brief history of the American Flag.
The Flag, created in 1777, inspired many people and brought a new wave of patriotism. The creator is unknown. The misconception says Betsy Ross made it, while there is no proof beyond her family's word. The minimal factual evidence supporting Betsy Ross creating the American Flag is records of Betsy receiving money to make a flag around the same time, however there is nothing stating it is the American Flag. The legend says George Washington approached Betsy Ross with the request to make his country's flag. (Flag). Many had ideas for the country's new flag. Britain's Union Jack inspired a majority of the citizen's ideas.

They seceded due to disagreements over slavery and states rights. Their flag, the confederate flag, represented the Confederate states when they weren't a part of the United States. (World). After the Civil War declaring slavery illegal and the Confederate states rejoined the rest of the country, everyone used the American Flag. Some kept the confederate flag as a symbol of heritage. Over the years, protests arose for various reasons. Some protests were executed by destroying the flag by burning, ripping, etc. Many patriotic citizens were angry and by 1932, every state had laws against destroying the flag. (Flag.) Concerns of freedom of speech rose and the supreme court decided that the states had the right to make laws allowing them to control the flag for public welfare and safety.
