Amy Tan appeals a lot to readers through her usage of ethos. Almost the whole essay is emotionally driven. All of the experiences tie back to how she and her mom migrated to America from China. That must have been such a hard experience to mix two different cultures and then learn English at the same time. It is interested how she refers to her mother having “limited” and “broken” English. This must be that Amy learned English sooner than her mom or that school helped her pick it up quicker. Due to this limited English that her mom knew it caused Amy to be ashamed of her ability. Knowing how close mothers and daughters can get it must have been very emotional for them especially when her mom had her help talk to people. As a teenager most
