Where I grew up, my parents bought bacon on the black market. This was not a strange thing, in fact, there were many ways Islam was a constant in our lives. Prayer calls sounded from the Mosques three times a day, farting was horrifically rude, and it was quite normal to cover our hair when walking through older districts. If someone grows up with religion present through everything, they can see it as normal and non-confronting, but people often get very different and diverse introductions to the subject. This essay will analyse how Peekay, Anakin, Obi-Wan and Luke’s archetypal characters in the ‘hero’s journey’ convention affect their attitude towards the religions around them. Religion will refer to a faith system that affects a person’s attitudes and values.

Whilst Anakin and Peekay are similar in upbringing and acceptance of Jediism/Christianity, Obi-Wan and Luke are incredibly different, but both ended up serving the Light side until the very end (though Luke did do a brief stint on the Dark Side, but he came back). In real life, many people have similar mindsets to religion depending on when are where they are introduced to it. For example, if they grew up with a religion, they usually end up following a version of that religion when they’re older, but if they are introduced to one when their values are already set in stone, they are a lot less likely to convert, or stay converted for very long. If a religion reflects or contains many of your values, then it may be the one for you, but there are thousands of religions in the world, and millions of different interpretations for each. So take a page from Peekay’s book, and go out and explore cultures and religions. You never know what you’ll
