Lighting brings out qualitative values in shows such as orientation, mood or feeling and pictorial beauty. Lighting is very important in setting the mood for a scene and connecting to the audience's’ emotions. In the “Pilot” episode of Breaking Bad, there is a scene where Walter White is sitting out by the pool. Walter is staring off at the pool, strikes a match and then throws it into the pool, giving the viewers a “loss of hope” feeling. The low-key lighting used in this scene gives off a very eerie and depressive feeling, which causes the audience to feel the pain that Walter is feeling as he throws the match into the pool. Lighting is not the only thing in shows that create meaning; camera angles also play a big part in creating meaning.
