After reviewing Erik Erikson’s stages of development, I believe that society can play a significant role in how an individual develops in the areas of trust, identity, intimacy, generativity, and integrity (Cacioppo & Freberg, 2013). Each of these characteristics is crucial in the development of an individual's personality. The stages take a person’s social development into consideration, as well as their psychological development. A statement that Erikson spoke about was “that children are not simply biological organisms but also products of society’s expectations, prejudices, and prohibitions” which seems to be a valid point (Erikson Institute, 2013, para. 2).
