Magis 6 The nature of European perceptions of the Muslim Empires during the 1500s to the 1700s was proven to be based on many false accusations and biases. The lack of effective communication between these two groups resulted in many unfavorable attitudes towards one another, although, Christians were seen to be the more inconsiderate party. From the beginning, Christians struggled with the idea of recognizing Islam as a rival world religion. Instead they preferred to define Muslims as an enemy by ethnic terms, rather than religious (73). Thevenot expressed the importance of getting to know someone before judging them, which has been shown to be the largest issue between the Christians and Muslims. Through taking the time to understand the Islamic culture by various Christians, many assumptions were proven to be invalid. The Turkish were found to be honest and sober people. They followed various standards that included marriage laws and the refusal to consume any type of alcohol. Above all else, they were extremely tolerable; more so than the Christians. This meant that anyone, even Christians and Jews, were welcome to live safely on Islamic land, as long as they paid taxes. There were even places of worship available for various religions. Nowhere in Christendom was this type of tolerance ever
