"Our massive welfare system consists of more than eighty tested programs providing cash, food, housing, medical care and social services" (Sheffield 1). Single mothers, abandoned families, and children are supported by many groups because of welfare. Welfare for children works and should not be reformed because poverty rates are dropping and they already receive sufficient benefits. To better understand why welfare should not be reformed, one must consider the opposition. Most people will say that supporting innocent children will benefit the leader of the household by suppling things that children need throughout life. However, enacting welfare reform makes it difficult for parents to provide for their kids. According …show more content…
Poverty means having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor. According to a study conducted by Michael D. Tanner, who is the head researcher at Cato Institute establishes, "[...] poverty rates decline [...] more than 20 percent in 1996 to 17.8 percent today (Tanner 4). This evidence shows that a great amount of people were in poverty before welfare was reformed. Welfare being enacted helps the people in the community to be able to provide for their families. Furthermore, according to a study in 2005 "[...] 1.6 million children [are] lifted out of poverty (Cauthen 6). The evidence shows after welfare reform was passed many single mothers or abandoned families are supported by the government to help keep the family together. Social security is a program by the U.S. federal government that provide income for people who are in need. A study of sociologist Nancy K. Cauthen, who is a deputy director at Columbia University, proves that welfare focuses on children by providing "[...] 4.5 million individuals (of only about a million were adults) received TANF benefits[...](Cauthen 3).This evidence argues that children or adults should get benefits that could help them get things they need or to stay on their feet. Also, the study stated by Columbia University reveals that "[...] Temporary Aid for Needy Families support is around ten billion for [needy] families[...] (Tanner 3). The benefits that are given to needy families help live a stable life. Without benefits for poverty-stricken families, children rates would decrease. Welfare for children should not be reformed because poverty rates are dropping and the benefits they receive are vital. The poverty rates would continue to decrease if welfare for children is not reformed. Additionally, children would still be provided with benefits they need. Citizens need to contact their Congressmen to ask them to not pass laws regarding welfare reform. Welfare is there to help those who cannot fully provide benefits for their families in need, and reform would cut benefits and the children
