Assault Weapons Should Be Banned

With the recent mass shootings such as Sandy Hook or the Aurora Theater shooting, pressure has been made to ban military-style assault rifles and high capacity magazines. Will a ban on these really save that many more lives or is there a necessity for high capacity magazines? When people hear the term assault rifle, they immediately picture a fully automatic weapon that our military will use to protect us and our freedoms. Granted these weapons are built similarly in appearances. These military-style assault weapons that citizens can purchase or own are a semi-automatic firearm. Meaning, the gun will only shoot one bullet for every pull of the trigger, just like a handgun.

It is not uncommon for someone to survive a single bullet wound. The determining factor is the shot placement and if the bullet struck any vital organs. Even with that, death is not a guarantee. An example of this is in the case of former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in 2011. Three years later she completed a skydive jump on the anniversary of the shooting (CBSNEWS). Dr. DiMaio, who is a former Chief Medical Examiner and gunshot expert, stated that if the victim arrives to the hospital with a beating heart, there is a 95% survival rate (Eligon).
No one enjoys hearing about the needless deaths associated with firearms. Even though gun related violence and homicides are on a decline, we do to continue this trend. Removing weapons from the law-abiding citizens in this country will not solve this problem. People need a way to properly defend themselves as our constitution dictates. Criminals don’t care about the laws, so to think that they would follow this is beyond belief. They will always find a way to get weapons to commit their
