A few weeks ago, during a family dinner, I watched my daughter’s conversing with each other, back and forth, like a fierce tennis match. My wife, Diana, shared an engaging observation while they were exchanging ideas about nutrition during dinner. Speaking quietly so only I could hear, she whispered, “They are as different as night and day.” My daughters, Jackie and Jenny, differ greatly, like night and day, in temperament in two significant ways.

Jackie has a higher frustration tolerance. Usually, when she gets into a disagreement she will often sit tolerantly and listen quietly. For example, Jackie had a dispute with Diana the other day about money. Diana became insistent that Jackie hoards every extra penny she earns, so she can afford a down payment on a house quicker. Disagreeing, Jackie shared her plan to save up for a down payment within two years. Jackie listened tranquilly while Diana presented her thoughts. She then shared her idea’s and plan to save for a down payment. The disagreement resolved itself after their discussion. On the other hand, Jennifer has a lower frustration tolerance. In contrast, Jenny easily becomes frustrated and explosive in situations of conflict. For instance, one day, Jenny, already frustrated with something that had happened at school, lost her temper. Jackie had asked Jenny to wash the dishes when she got home. Jenny didn’t feel like it was her responsibility to wash the dishes so she refused. The girl’s disagreement, then escalated. During the argument, she was eating a carrot and decided to throw the carrot at Jackie; this is a prime example of a time where Jenny’s low frustration tolerance was
