The beginning step in assisting Charlie with his new bilateral hearing aids is to become involved with his multidisciplinary team or IEP team. It is important to discuss with Charlie’s teachers how loud the classroom noise may be and provide alternative solutions to optimize signal to noise ratio for Charlie. The IEP team’s end goal for Charlie should be to eventually get him back into a mainstream classroom in his grade level so he does not continue to fall behind academically. One option for Charlie’s teachers is to utilize a personal FM system. The teacher can use the transmitter microphone to send sound signal directly into Charlie’s hearing aid, so he does not miss any information she is giving.
