Did you know that book banning is the most widespread form of censorship in the United States? Hi, I’m Makaylee Exline. I’m Renee. I’m Haley Sparent. This is our first year at Trumbull Career and Technical Center, and also our first time representing FCCLA at a competition. As our program is affiliated with FCCLA, Renee and I are also officers.

According to the Free Speech Center, “Censorship occurs when individuals or groups try to prevent others from saying, printing, or depicting words and images”(Free Speech Center). For over 400 years, books around the country have continued to get removed from classroom libraries, school libraries, and even public community libraries. “Advocates for banning a book or certain books fear that children will be swayed by its contents, which they regard as potentially dangerous. They commonly fear that these publications will present ideas, raise questions, and incite critical inquiry among children that parents, political groups, or religious organizations are not ready to address or that they find inappropriate”(Free Speech Center). So as students ourselves we took matters into our own hands and decided to each read a book off of the banned books list. Will we be persuaded to overthrow the government and become unruly kids? Spoiler alert: the answer is no.

After researching many of the books found on the banned books list, each of us proceeded to read and analyze one that specifically drew our attention: the three books include, Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. We will now take the time to give a short synopsis of each book and explain why we believe they shouldn't be

As states are banning books in schools, they are ultimately taking away a chance for us to learn about sensitive topics, inspire, and teach older students that not every story is a fairytale. Family consumer sciences fall into the category of human development as well, which isn’t just the basics like math, science, and social studies, but we also have to understand mental struggles, financial issues, and strong emotions.

We are here to teach unknowns about this controversial topic to give them a better understanding. Before, we gave our classmates the idea that just because a book is banned doesn’t mean it’s bad, and we insisted that it’s because our educators don't necessarily think it’s something we can learn from.

Of course, we don’t know every detail about how or why these books are banned, but we are asking ourselves and everyone else, why do educators take the learning opportunity away from us? Most books have very similar reasons why they have the controversy behind them, but it doesn’t portray the idea of taking the experience away from us. As we are still learning about this topic, we thank you for allowing us to share and demonstrate our knowledge relating to why these books are banned and, in our opinion, why they shouldn’t be
