The Red Queen begins in a village, The Stilts. A red girl, Mare Barrow, is fearing she is going to be conscripted into the war. Mare has always been compared to her younger sister, Gisa who has a job, and is always perfect according to her mother. Well, Gisa said she was going to take her to town to help her get a job, so she can save her friend Kilorn from conscription. She meets a man in the market, named Cal, who feels a lot of sympathy for her, being a poor Red and all. Mare does not want to be a princess especially because of how bad the Silvers treat the Reds. The Queen does not know what Mare is, so she gives Mare a new life. Mare is the long lost daughter of Lady Titanos and Lord Titanos, making her Mareena Titanos. They say she was born on the battle field, both of her parents were killed, so a Red took her in. She was Silver born and Red raised. There has been a recent attack on the capital city, Archeon, by a group known as the Scarlett Guard. The Scarlett Guard is a large group of Reds trying to fight for their freedom, and equality from the Silvers. Their leader is a woman named Farley. One night, Cal takes Mare home to see her family one last time before she is sent off to be married to Prince Maven. Mare notices her oldest brother, Shade, is not there with the rest of the family. Shade was executed, nobody knows why, but Mare has figured it out. Shade was killed because he was a member of the Scarlett Guard.
