My Bridge between Worlds Picking one of my non-academic communities or worlds to write about was a piece of cake, I picked the Viola community. Not much is known, by outsiders, of this community and its communication procedures. It is a complicated world to enter and once in, it’s a lifelong pledge. However, the commitment is not as bad as it sounds. The skills I have learned in the violist community have improved my ability to find different ways to communicate my ideas, and has taught me to have patience with myself and others when new things do not come easy. The viola is a stringed instrument that looks like a violin, but sounds as low as the cello. I have been playing this instrument for the past fifteen years and I, like most violists, chose it because violists are as uncommon and special as the instrument itself. Another way to communicate the pace of a song, is by each person then each stand. Each stand has two people and the lead stand, by looking at each other frequently, will set their pace together. Then each person directly behind them will follow them and look at their stand partner to match pace so that each individual practices finding the tempo from the person in front of them then work at being one with their stand partner. That way, one by one, then stand by stand, we each sync ourselves until we are all exactly the same and acting more like one person than several. It takes time and patience to pick up these skills and understand the communication, but slow and steady wins the
