Why it needs to be abolished

Capital punishment is the most irrevocable crime that any government can inflict upon a human being. In America there are 36 states in that still deem capital punishment legal. Living in a modern society it is not necessary or justified to murder somebody for crime he or she committed. Capital punishment is immoral and unjustified because of the risk of wrongful conviction, the high expenses that go into executing somebody, and the scientific studies that fail to show that the possibility of capital punishment as repercussion for a crime does not deter people from committing the crime.

Wrongful conviction in any court case is a serious matter, it is even more serious when human life is at stake. There has been over 144 men and woman who have been removed from death row all over the US since 1973. In certain cases there have been victims who were removed minutes away from their impending execution. "Almost all defendants in capital cases cannot afford their own attorneys. In many cases the appointed lawyers are overworked, underpaid, or lacking trial experience" It is obvious that if there is even a slightest chance of a false prosecution, being executed should not be an option.

To be on death row (which usually averages out to 10 years) means the person has to go through a certain judicial process to ensure that the court is not making a mistake and wrongfully putting somebody on death row. This process costs millions of dollars. "California currently spends $184 million on the death penalty each year and is on track $1 billion in the next five years." All of this money could be going towards programs and companies that can make our communities a safe and better place to live in.
