According to Jean Watson, caring is the ethical and moral ideal of nursing with transpersonal and humanistic values. Watson’s theory of nursing practice is based on the ten Caritas processes containing a spiritual dimension and an open call of love and caring (Watson, 1997). This essay specifically describes the Caritas processes 7 and 8 explaining the promotion of transpersonal teaching -learning and provision for a supportive, protective, mental, social and spiritual environment respectively. Understanding individual needs is a challenge as they vary depending on the change in their physical and environmental background (Norman, Rossilo & Skeleton, 2016, p. 402). Recognizing the internal (mental, spiritual, sociocultural belief) and external environment (comfort, privacy, safety, clean and aesthetic environment) of each individual is important to promote the healing environment (Watson, 1979, p. 10). Personally, comfort can be promoted by meeting physical needs (example: encouragement to have pain medication, meeting hygienic needs), privacy and safety must have considered during the delivery of nursing care. As per this standard, the registered nurse should be able to develop a mutual trust and respect in their field of work. This may include effective communication with the surrounding people, maintaining their dignity and without affecting their cultural values and beliefs. Nurses can also contribute towards improving the health-related decisions by directing the clients to resourceful sources and endorsing them in a manner without interfering in their freedom to act and legal capacity.
