Character Analysis: All The Kings Men

All the Kings Men, based off of the influential governor of fortieth governor of Louisiana, brings an interesting perspective on Populism, politics and fascism in the twentieth century. One of the main characters, Willie Stark, transforms from a small-town lawyer with no chance in a serious political race to a fiercely competitive, intimidating leader. While it is often difficult to see how a man such as Huey Long with fascist ideals could come to power, Willie Stark’s influence obtained by power becomes extremely apparent throughout his different types of relationships. In this way, interconnections with others such as his personal aide Jack Burden, his relationship with the Judge, and the state he governs effectively exhibits how such a man can come to power. Jack experiences Willie’s power on personal and political levels. Jack, while the principle character, does not have a strong personality. For example, Jack never pursues his teenage love interest, Anne, because he never obtains the confidence to do so. It is revealed, however, that Willie Stark has been having an affair with her throughout the novel. When Jack discovers the affair, he becomes filled with rage and experiences what he calls “The Great Twitch”. He drives to California to escape the situation. While Jack seemingly wastes his life by not going after the things he wants, Willie steps up and takes it, proving Willie to be strong willed enough to get what he
