Character Analysis: Orange Is The New Black

Prison is by far one of the worst places to be. Every inmate is confined and denied of a variety of freedom under the authority of the state as a form of punishment. In Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange is the New Black, she explains how she ends up being one of those inmates who faces all sorts of struggles and adversities in the women’s prison. Before she got sentenced to 15 months in prison, she had met a woman named Nora who traveled around the world with her, unfortunately ended up being a mule for drug smuggling and money laundering. Piper decided to leave all this behind her and she met a man named Larry who she married and later moved to New York City with. Although she tried to let her past go, the police unexpectedly showed up at her door sentencing her to prison. However, even though Piper Kerman lacks the responsibility that got her into prison, she and her inmates always had a positive outlook on things in response to the adversity they are facing in prison by demonstrating openness from the Habits of Mind, creating an environment which they do not feel like caged rats based on Lauren Slater’s text, and asserting their autonomy depicted from Daniel Pink’s, Drive. …show more content…
The most basic types of characteristics would be openness, engagement, persistence, responsibility, flexibility, curiosity and openness. In order for piper to survive and adapt to the prison environment she needed to obtain some of the characteristics. However, Piper unfortunately lacked responsibility, the characteristic which inevitably got her into prison in the first place. In prison she gained a sense of openness that made her befriend many new inmates, create distinct relationships, and try new things that she has not done before this
