Character Analysis: The Watsons Go To Birmingham

The only thing that can make you sit down and write a mile long essay is an extremely good book. An example of this would have to be The Watsons Go to Birmingham. Two of the main characters are, Two brothers Kenny and Byron (by-rin), these two brothers are both dynamic characters, but the most dynamic I feel, is Byron. Throughout the story Byron goes through emotional, physical and mental changes, which all change the verdict of the story for the better and create a phenomenal background for the plot.

One of the emotional changes Byron goes through, is when the trip to Birmingham just starts, and Byron realizes that all of these punishments that were mentioned before are all about to happen as soon as they arrive in Alabama and he doesn’t talk until they are halfway there. The first words he said were,” Can I play my music now,” everyone was stoked to hear “daddy cool” talk again. During the 1963 baptist church bombing Byron was just told that his little sister Joey was in the church and he actually showed emotion. He even cried. This is another example of Byron’s changes throughout this novel.

He even dyed his hair orange. When he tried to hide it with a hat and bandana, but his mom’s hawk eye catches him right before he sneakily exited the house. His mom left him ,“to his dad’s mercy”. When Byron’s dad returned from work, “daddy cool” was assigned a jail cell, the bathroom, with a roommate his father. The rest of the family was on the couch, flinching and covering their ears every time they heard the “snip-snip” and Byron screaming “awwww man”.
