A large portion of my high school career was spent in cheerleading, an eleven month sport that pushed me in many ways. Through the program, I have found life-long friends, gained indispensable leadership experiences, and became an active member in my community. Not only was it a physically and time demanding sport, but cheerleading was also what pushed me to become a leader. In addition to coaches, the leadership on the team was largely based off of the individuals willing to lead the team. Whether it was to motivate the team, provide constructive criticism, or redirect the team’s focus, there were always leaders that would address these tasks. The start of my junior year was mainly spent learning the role of a varsity cheerleader including projects to promote school spirit and extra practices. However, as my junior year wore on, the focus became to prepare me and two of my fellow cheerleaders with the responsibilities of Varsity Captains that we needed to fulfill our senior year in order to maintain the BV Cheer legacy.
