Do you know that chimpanzees share about 98.4% of their DNA with humans (Amazing Facts about Chimpanzees- OneKind)? Contrary to what you might think, chimpanzees are not monkeys. They are great apes. The difference between monkeys and great apes, is that monkeys have tails, and great apes do not(Chimp Facts, Articles, Recommended Reading - Save the Chimps). Two other great apes that are closely related to humans are gorillas and orangutans(Chimpanzee | African Wildlife Foundation). Chimpanzees are an endangered primate with many human characteristics.

Chimpanzees are great apes (Chimpanzee| Basic Facts about Chimpanzees | Defenders of Wildlife). Most commonly they are black but they can turn partly grey as they age. They often have short white beards. Infant chimpanzees have facial skin that is pink to brown, which darkens by adulthood (Amazing Facts about Chimpanzees- OneKind). Chimpanzees can weigh anywhere from 55 to 110 pounds. The average height for chimps is about four feet (Chimpanzee | African Wildlife Foundation). Chimpanzees live in forests (Chimpanzee | African Wildlife Foundation). They are more partial to heavy tropical rain forests. However, they can additionally be found in secondary growth forests, woodlands, bamboo forests, swamps and open savanna (Chimpanzee | Basic Facts About Chimpanzees | Defenders of Wildlife).
