Christmas Concert Observation

I had never been to a University level Christmas concert. The chatter echoed through the room as I entered. There were people representing every color, every age, and every social and economic status from the surrounding community. Smiles were present on everyone’s faces as they talked to one another. The Christmas spirit I lacked was present in that room. I found a seat in the middle of a pew and politely passed by people as I made my way to it. I sat and looked at the beautiful trees decorated on the stage, the choir stand ready for its choir, and the piano waiting for its player. Anticipation filled my body and I waited for the music to begin. The lights dimmed. The wind ensemble began to play and that is when I noticed they had set up on the upper tier. The mesmerizing sound coming from the instruments felt like a blanket drifting down and wrapping the audience in its warmth. The choir entered in two lines, holding candles and singing Keep Your Lamps. The entrance and the song gave the room a very Gothic feel, particularly when the choir began stomping their feet in a uniform rhythm. This would be a very different program than I ever witnessed before. I knew the songs would differ from what I expected, but when the choir took the stage I expected the typical performance.
