Cinco de Mayo – May 5th – is a holiday celebrated to pay tribute to the Mexican victory in the Battle of Puebla of 1862 against France during the Franco-Mexican War. The president of Mexico at the time, Benito Juárez, stated that their country was financially unstable and was unable to pay off any foreign debts. This caused Britain, Spain, and France to order reimbursement. Juárez was able to agree upon a middle ground with Britain and Spain; however, France did not back down and even used this debt as a reason to invade Mexican territory.
