Cinco de Mayo is a very popular festival among many Americans, as it means food, drinks and entertainment to them. Although it is a Mexican tradition in origins, the Americans, especially those on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, have adapted the festival to their lifestyles. Surprisingly enough, Cinco de mayo is not so much prevalent in Mexico.
Cinco de Mayo, literally translated in Spanish, means “Five of May”. Mexicans celebrate this day commemorating their unlikely victory over France at the battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862. The French forces, under the leadership of Napoleon III had to come to Mexico to collect war debt from them.
