Clara Barton, born on December 25, 1821 in Oxford Massachusetts, was a nurse during the Civil War. She dedicated her life to serving others. She was a teacher, nurse, volunteer and a president of an organization. She became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield.” (Benge) Clara accomplished many things throughout her life. Clara helped her mother take care of their brother for two years after an accident crippled him for a little while. When her brother was finally better and after attending a private school for some time, she became a teacher to overcome her shyness at the age of 15, and eventually opened a free public school in New Jersey. During the mid-1850’s, Clara moved to Washington DC to work as a clerk in the US patent office. She found out that the soldiers would need her even in the early periods of the war. Some were already wounded, hungry and needed bedding and clothing. Barton would work wherever she could, in makeshift hospitals, on the battlefields, rundown mansions and farmhouses.
