Clarissa Barton, was a pioneering nurse who founded the American Red Cross, which is still used to this day. She was a hospital nurse in the Civil War, a teacher, and a patent clerk. Her dad Stephen was the captain of the local militia and a selectman in Oxford. Her mother, Sarah was a very independent woman who supported women’s rights and the abolition of slavery. She had four siblings, Dorothea, David, Stephen, and Sarah. She went by Clara and was widely known as the “Angel of the Battlefield”. Clara was born on Christmas Day in the year of 1821 and was raised in Oxford, Massachusetts. As a child, she did what all other kids did which consisted of going to school, doing chores and cooking for her family.

She took it upon herself to nurse him back to good health. Doctors were sure he would not live much longer, but Clara knew Stephen would make it. Everyday she fed him, gave him his daily dose of medicine, helped him change his clothes and even helped him to eventually walk. About a year later he had made a full recovery.
During her teen years Barton taught kids in a small building. Every kid was welcomed, rich or poor. She loved the feeling of being able to educate kids who really didn’t have any knowledge prior to her school. Clara was an awesome teacher, kids from rich neighborhoods even came to her school. Soon, she didn’t have enough room for all the kids she was teaching, and relocated to a bigger building, paying for it out of her own pocket. When Clara was a young woman, she saw firsthand that the soldiers fighting on the battlefield did not have nearly enough supplies to get through the war. Clara, along with her sister, started to bring a few supplies to the soldiers to help out as much as she could. She knew many of them were going to die, and felt uneasy, because she wanted so badly to help.
