Clara barton, like many great people, saw a need in a time of great crisis and acted upon on it. During the Civil War also known as “The War Between the States” , was more than just a nurse. She was a teacher, nurse, founder, and inspiration to all she met. Clara Barton had a dream and never stopped achieving her goals and always found more ways to help those in need. Born in Oxford, Massachusetts on December 15, 1821 Clarissa Barton was a shy child. She was the youngest of five children, raised by her mother and father. Barton’s father was Captain of a local army and government official, This would provide Barton with her military knowledge and expertise later in life. Clara truly found her calling after her brother, David Barton, became injured from a farm accident.Clara took on the roles and responsibility of becoming his nurse, caring, cleaning and administering medicine to him. It is believed that this is where Clara found her true calling for helping others. At the young age of fifteen, Barton began a career in teaching. She taught in poor areas, where families did not have the means of paying for school. Clara saw the opportunity to help those who could not help themselves and worked for little to nothing while teaching. Barton received a message as she was caring for troops that her father had fallen ill, she left the field to be with her father. She remained with her father until after he passed and honoring her father’s wishes she returned to the battlefield. In 1864 she became a superintendent nurse for the Army of the James. While she was helping soldiers she saw a large number of letters from family and loved ones distraught over a missing loved one. Deciding to help put the loved ones at ease, Barton established an office to help locate soldiers who had disappeared in the line of
