Under his grandfather's guidance, Thomas attended a Catholic school taught by nuns. This had fostered his self-discipline and love for learning (Pavlich, Katie). Clarence Thomas is currently married to Virginia Thomas, who was married in 1987 with an adopted son, Martin. The Thomases started talking about taking care of Martin. Martin's dad, who is related to Thomas, got in trouble and went to jail, leaving Martin without a father. Thomas felt a strong connection to Martin's situation because when he was young, his own dad was not around, and his grandparents took care of him in a similar way. Even though Thomas had a grown-up son from another marriage, he and his wife, Ginni, did not have kids together. They suggested to Martin's parents that they could take care of him (Kaplan, Joshua).
