Life can seem lonely sometimes but there is usually someone there in your corner to be there when you need it. I was born and raised here in Augusta, Georgia. I grew up with my mother, step-father, and siblings. I also grew up with a speech impediment and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). As a child, having a speech impediment made it genuinely hard to make friends and made me extremely shy. I was terrified to leave the house, leave my mother, and speaking in front of or to people. As my shyness and speech got worse, the children got meaner and more ruthless. At the beginning of my fifth grade year, I ended up transferring schools. I became completely antisocial. In school of over 1,000 students, why would I not be especially since I was the youngest and the shortest in my grade? My parents really pushed me to be more involved so I did something I would never had done before and joined concert band, wind ensemble, and marching band. I had my class changed to beginners’ band, chose a B flat clarinet as my instrument. When I met the band director, Mr. Chester. He noticed how soft spoken and shy I was and challenged it. He had me do solo playing tests every week to help better me as a musician and build my confidence. Mr. Chester was not only my band director but he was also my counselor. He helped me with emotional issues I dealt with when dealing with other people. Being in band with Mr. Chester impacted my life in a major way. He taught me about self-confidence, family, and how to be proud of my work. Although I still stutter but it is only when I am mad or under-pressure. I still find no joy in talking in front of people but unlike when I was younger, I will not back away from the challenge. Before I joined band I was alone and antisocial. When I joined band, I had more than just friends I had
