Columbine has revolutionized the way school shootings are looked at and handled today. Columbine has now been a reference point on what can be done to prevent shootings in schools. The tragic event, which happened over a decade ago, has made a lasting impact on the schools in America today. This lasting impact is evident by the security systems that are now in place, the intruder drill systems which have been implemented, and the statistics of declining school shooting rates.

The massacre has caused other schools in America to adapt their plans on what to do in the event of a shooting. Lots of schools now have a strong security system to reduce the possibility of another attack happening. For example, the Smithville School District now has a security system in place which prevents anyone just walking right in without checking in. This could have been helpful in Columbine because it could have been spotted on security cameras that the two students were walking into the school with weaponry.

School districts now have new plans besides the typical duck and cover approach because that approach seemed to be faulty at Columbine. One new method of protection that has been installed is to hide from the shooters. This proved to be efficient at Columbine when the teacher hid in a library cabinet and survived the attacks. Another method that has been implemented in schools is to run out of the school to a designated safe place. This proved to be efficient to because students ran out of Columbine to the elementary school and were safe there. The new systems that have been put into place can be very impactful when it comes to keeping as many students alive as possible as seen through the survivors of Columbine who used these
