In the early beginnings of modern American, Christopher Columbus and his men were perceived as heroes and conquerors. They were known as the discoverers of the New World. Thier treatment of aborigines was never taken into account when the national holiday of Columbus Day was created. With the long-lasting effects of his cruelty, this federal holiday should be abolished. Columbus Day should no longer exist nor celebrated in the United States. The federal holiday celebrates the accomplishments of a man that caused torment to the aboriginal people. Besides the torment Christopher Columbus caused, he also was among the last explorers to reach the Americas, not the first.
