The War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War were both wars that occurred on land that was or would become American homeland. These wars had many similarities including how the war was started, why people were opposed or supportive of the war, and of the ideas of those who were critics of the war.
The War of 1812 was declared because of rising tension between the British and United States as well as American willingness to expand and take more territory. Since the British were at war with France, they created trade restrictions against the French. The tensions that arose were very numerous and occurred so often that it metamorphosed the opinions of enough people that it caused the start of the war. The economy was being degraded as a result of the large number of merchant ships being impressed as well as the trade restrictions that Britain had put out toward France. This upset many upper class people including businessmen and plantation owners as well as the federal government because companies were having a more difficult time collecting revenue and tax dollars. Northern Whigs were the political group to go against the truthfulness and constitutionality of “Mr. Polk’s War”. Many of these Northern Whigs did not approve of this war because they believed that it did not have any real reasoning aside from America being greedy as a result of Manifest Destiny.
