Congestive heart failure occurs when the ventricles of the heart become weak and can no longer pump enough oxygen rich blood to the other organs in the body. Weakening in the heart is most likely seen in patients a past medical history of coronary artery disease (CAD) caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries. The plaque build up, or atherosclerosis, narrows the blood flow to the heart. This will contribute to high blood pressure levels also known as hypertension. In some cases CAD may also cause myocardial infarction (MI). An MI will reduce the amount of oxygen getting to the heart muscle and cause cells of the heart to begin to die.
