Critical Thinking
Critical thinking will help me in my training as a Registered Nurse by showing me how to take other people’s viewpoint along with my own and decide on who has the most valuable argument. Prior to taking the critical thinking class, I felt as though my opinions were correct because they were correct for me. I have not learned how to take other people point of view into consideration and to be open minded as long as they have valid reasons to support their conclusion.
The first technique I have learned that will help me not only in my career, but my personal life as well is to have valid reasons to support my conclusions. According to Diestler (2012), “Without reasons, you have no argument; you simply have an assertion, a statement of someone’s opinion, as evidenced in the following classic limerick” (p. 9). To come to a conclusion and not have valid reasons to back your claim can lead others not to agree or believe in what you are saying. Giving others valid reasons for your conclusion can assist in others being compliant, building trust and strong relationships.

It is important when dealing from others from all walks of life to be objective. Just because one person feels a certain way due to their value system doesn’t necessarily mean that others will feel the same way. In the nursing field one will interact with people from all walks of life and different backgrounds. It is important to be sensitive to the culture of others and their belief system. If you are open to listen to their point of view, then the other parties involved maybe willing to listen to your opinions and why you rate your belief on the value system that you have chosen.
