In the light of the recent tragedies that are happening in Texas, I thought it would be useful to know of other dangers that flooding causes rather than just property damage. Whenever you think of the term “flooding”, images come to mind of water up to peoples roofs, cars sitting in the road immensely flooded, and residents wondering aimlessly for dry ground. Images that don’t tend to come to mind are rashes and burns, Mosquito-borne illnesses, and other serious diseases. You don’t really think of hidden mental and health dangers when it comes to flood and standing water. During a flood, it is exceptionally hard to practice good hygiene. The people of Texas are being herded into shelters, probably far past the maximum limit of people. In that case, it is very easy to spread germs of all kinds. Its more common for people to just have the common respiratory infection and stomach flu, but in an environment like Texas, the warm weather to trigger asthma, allergies, and mold to rapidly grow. …show more content…
When there is no more continuous water flowing, there is now an increased risk people have to infection when it comes to mosquito and other insect bites. Mosquitos that are carrying diseases such as West Nile or the Zika virus, love to hangout around standing flood water. Being around it so much causes them to breed quickly as well. In 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit, doctors saw a major increase of West Nile cases. Whenever I first heard of the Hurricane Harvey tragedy, I was truly concerned about Houston, Texas residents. Whenever excessive flooding occurs, people should look closer to the physical and mental damage, not just the material
