I agree with the values that decentralized leadership brings. It can bring ingenuity and freedom of maneuver for subordinates. However, sometimes a direct clear concise directive is required. I have seen this too many times where a commander would hold information and then be complex on why the end result is not what he/she expected. Key critical missions are often planned out for months in advance and the leader of the mission makes sure that all aspects are matching his or her requirements. I believe, a leader should find the balance of both and understand two things, the importance of the mission and the competence of his or her subordinates.
