The United States of America was created with several promises to its future generations. In the its own Star Spangled Banner, it is famously referred to as “the land of the free and the home of the brave”. The country undeniably stands for liberty and independence, but even without looking closely one can see hundreds of social issues impacting everyday lives today. A question arises: was the Declaration of Independence’s statement that “all men are created equal” nothing but a fantasy? Due to numerous factors, it is painfully true that not all people were born with equal rights in the nation during the period from colonial times to the Civil War. The most notable occurrence is slavery. By the seventeenth century, a large amount of black men and women had came to what is now the North of the states. As time passed, they became the only people that were enslaved in the country. Children, adults, and elders were forced into hard labor, bought and sold by white males like property. In fact, most owners did think of their slaves as objects. Mr. Stekloff’s third period class discovered how worthless they were viewed. Slaves could not own anything, yet they belonged to their masters and were manipulated by fear and a lack of information about the outside world.
