Patriotism these days is like Christmas lots of people get caught up in a festive atmosphere full with lights and spectacles. We hear reminders about “the true meaning” of Christmas and we may even mutter a few guilt ridden words to that effect ourselves but each of us spends more time and thought in parties, gift giving, and the other paraphernalia of a secularized holiday than we do deepening our devotion to the true meaning.

It was the 4th of July and it was hotter than hell and half of Georgia. I was hanging out with some of my friends and we were driving through a small subdivision in wentzville and I was in the back seat looking out the window when I spotted some teenager about 15 or 16 years old, stomping on an american flag and one of them was trying to burn it. I yelled stop to Dom who was driving and when I got out, I was extremely pissed off and I walked over to those kids disgracing the american flag. I picked it up from the ground and told them, my family has given to much to this country for any of you to be able to disrespect this sacred flag. All of my great uncles served in vietnam, two of them received purple hearts and my cousin is serving in afghanistan and he has survived a bullet to the helmet and three IED’s but what keeps him going is his love for this grand country.

I learned that it is not based on how much red white and blue you wear. It's not about who the leader of the country is and whether you agree or disagree with him. It's not about how much you spent on fireworks to celebrate on the 4th of
