The use of the word strength varies greatly depending on the context it is used in. Strength has a variety of definitions in which differs upon its use in a sentence. The term strong originated before 900 from the Middle English as well as Old English from the term strengthu which is the “Germanic base of strong” (Oxford Dictionary). Strengthu meant bodily power, force vigor, firmness, fortitude, manhood, violence, and moral resistance. The definition of strength contains a vast variety of meaning to it, as it is made up of many complex denotations. Similar terms to the word strength are power, toughness, resilience, or durability. This term may be used to imply the strength of one physically, emotionally, and mentally. Over time, the use of the term strength has increased over time, yet has consistently been oftenly used throughout the Middle English language, and has converted into current day English.

This perception of the word can be applied while describing ones bodily strength, or ability to perform activities that require a powerful force. Strength, in terms of physical strength is one of the most commonly used forms of the word, as it is the original definition. Physical strength can be acquired by ways of athleticism and physical training such as weight lifting. The term strength by means of physical strength is often used amongst athletes and those who execute activities that require a certain amount of muscular strength.
