The Dieppe Raid, also known as the Battle of Dieppe was an attack on the German occupied port of Dieppe by the Allies. The 2nd Canadian Division had several operations to prepare for the raid. However the Allies’ plan of a surprise attack on the Germans was unsuccessful. The troops’ failure to communicate with reinforcements also resulted in high number of casualties. Ultimately, the Battle of Dieppe in 1942 proved to be a valuable experience which helped the Allies improve in battle preparation, tactics and communication.

The poor preparation for the raid resulted in immense difficulty in fighting against German troops. Before the raid started, the Allies prepared operation maps to plan out their attack. However, there were a lot of misconceptions about the beach surface.When the Allies were making a map to plan out the raid on Dieppe, the Allies took pictures of the French port of Dieppe. Unfortunately, the guns set out by the Germans are withdrawn into caves during the daytime, making it unnoticed by the Allies. In the end, the guns emplaced in caves by the Germans did not appear in the photos taken by the Allies; therefore, when the Allies started to raid Dieppe, their soldiers were showered down with machine guns. Although the Dieppe Raid was not successful, the experience the Allies gained from their own mistakes are invaluable. The battle showed the Allies that having a strong fleet of troops would not guarantee themselves victory, but thorough planning and detailed battle tactics will help them gain success.
