Throughout history there have been certain monumental events that have changed the world forever, whether for better or for worse. These events have defined the eras that have led to the invention of great things that the world never thought to be possible. Many of these things can be attributed to the idea of disobedience. Disobedience, a trait most never thought to strive for, has helped shape the world to what it is today by promoting social growth and development.

Every invention ever created started with someone trying to change something. They refused to follow what everyone else was doing and made a difference. When Steve Jobs said he was going to make a computer that people could keep in their homes, everyone thought he was crazy. He went against the social norms, disobeying what everyone said he should do, and created a personal computer that would forever change the world’s idea of technology. This small act of disobedience has led to the great empire of Apple technology. This idea of disobedience as a positive trait can also be applied to more social inventions. Gandhi was one of the first world leaders to use civil disobedience to achieve change. One of the most well known marches that he led was to protest Britain’s Salt Acts that prohibited Indians from collecting or selling sea salt. Instead they were forced to buy it from the British at extremely high prices and taxes. Gandhi marched over two hundred miles to the coast where he spoke and went to the sea to make salt. This large gathering of protesters inspired thousands of others to rise up. Gandhi never fought back physically, and instead lived in poverty and used hunger strikes to emphasize his campaign. Eventually his acts of civil disobedience led to India’s independence. These two men show that disobedience can, in fact, be an admired trait. Countries have risen and fallen from the obedience or disobedience of its leader. Similarly, the culture of society has become what it is today due to the disobedience of past generations. Due to this, disobedience can be viewed as a positive trait, but it is for history to decide whether or not that is
