Change, in many cases, is a good thing. Without it our society would never advance - not technologically, socially or economically. The word disobedience often has a negative connotation to it, but disobedience is what brings about these changes that allow our society to move forward. Mahatma Gandhi, a well known name worldwide, was one of the most disobedient individuals in global history. He broke many of the laws that were enforced in British India and was imprisoned. Gandhi did not incite violence. In fact he was the one who brought about the idea of peaceful protest. Gandhi’s crime was disagreeing with the British and fighting for his people. Terrorist groups like ISIS and the Taliban incite violence and force their people to follow laws that the community does not agree with. One of these laws is that girls should not be educated. In such a dangerous environment where nobody dares to challenge these terrorists a young girl named Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban after standing up for the education of young girls. The whole world applauds her but in the government she lived under, being shot in the head was the appropriate punishment for her “disobedience”. Civil disobedience is what changes society for the better, by exposing the faults in a government’s legislation. Even if civil disobedience doesn’t incite change at the time, it might change the perceptions of future generations as they look back. Thanks to the effort of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and many other leaders like them who were brave enough to stand up. There are now more places in the world where people can live freely and peacefully without having to fear discrimination or violence. Civil disobedience makes it so that the law works with us and not against
