Why are we Racist?

Is racism still occurring in today’s society?

Introduction:
What comes to your head when you hear the word Racist? That it’s okay? Is it acceptable? We are all equal no matter our race, beliefs or the colour of our skin. In Harper Lee’s novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ it shows racial discrimination against Tom Robinson because of the colour of his skin. In Maycomb, Alabama around the 1930’s a person who was ‘black’ was considered the lower-class citizen and was not to be excepted, and it is still partly like this today. Us humans all need to learn to love not to hate. Is racism still occurring in today’s society? How is racism occurring in Harper Lee’s novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’? How can we stop racist acts all together?

“All racism is wrong, and denying that it exists does not make it go away.” (Gary Ross) This quote means that we cannot deny that racism isn’t a serious issue. An Australian example of racist acts is the Stolen Generation. The Stolen Generation is where most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders children were removed from their families because the government thought it would be better to be raised with white families not black in the period of 1910 – 1970. But in today’s society racism is everywhere but it is more common in schools, neighbourhoods, shopping centres, public transport and the work place, people can also be targeted through the eye of social media by anonymously commenting hurtful things. Do not let others make fun of you and call you a nigger or any other racist word. We need to strive for equality against everyone with colour. We need to learn to love and respect everyone.
