Dominant vs. Non-dominant

This experiment was tested on 5 different people to see which hand is stronger (dominant or non-dominant). To test the 5 participants, they had to put both of their hands in ice water at 40 degrees with 20 ice cubes to see which hand comes out first. The hypothesis said that the dominant hand would stay in longer because it is said to be stronger (“WebMD”). All together within the 3 trials, the results said that the dominant hand is stronger.

About 70-95% of humans are right handed. A small amount of people are “lefties”, only about 5-30%. An indefinite number of people are ambidextrous (“Scientific American”). To find out which hand is stronger, this experiment was conducted. The hypothesis was, if both hands are placed in ice water at 40 degrees with 20 ice cubes, then the dominant hand would stay in longer because it is known for being stronger (“WebMD”).

To prove which hand is stronger, doctors and researchers could find out more information about dominant hands and pain receptors. Researchers say from the Journal of the American Dental Association that redheads tend to have a mutation in a gene called Melanocortin (MC1R). It belongs to a group of receptors that are in the brain. The researchers say that the mutation in the gene appears to influence more sensitivity to pain.

“A dominant hand – your right hand, if you’re right handed, for example – may interpret pain more quickly and accurately than the non- dominant hand, which may explain why the dominant side can endure longer” “(WebMD”). Those facts encouraged this experiment. This experiment attempted to find which hand is stronger (dominant or non-dominant). The hypothesis says that the dominant would be stronger, rather than the non-dominant. For example, say if you are right handed, then your right hand will stay in the water longer than your left hand.
