This moment in which Mina Harker is watching Dracula crumble away allows peace to overcome her along with a feeling of safety. It was truly a “miracle” that they found and killed Dracula because he was so hard to find, but they knew it had to be done. Once they had reached him it did not take long for them to defeat him. This feeling of gladness that Mina had was not just for her safety and the avenging of Lucy’s death but for fact that she knew that when they killed Dracula, his soul was set free. Dracula was stuck being a vampire and had no choice but to go on living that way, his soul had been trapped. The “look of peace” seen in his eyes by Mina was reassuring because it made her aware that he was finally at peace. It is only in truly life changing moments like this one that someone notices the features of the sky and their surroundings like Mina. The “light of the setting sun” puts emphasis on the peace and serenity felt by all the characters after Dracula’s death. Sunsets are calm and ambient, which translates into this ending. Right in this moment, the antagonist was defeated. All of the conflict brought upon Mina and the others by Dracula was avenged. For Arthur Holmwood, this was his way of finding peace for his fiance. Abraham Van Helsing felt obliged to make up for not being able to save Lucy earlier and Mina was just trying to find justice for her friend.
