Drug trafficking has always been a problem in the world. Cocaine and heroin are only two of the most trafficked drugs, current levels of world heroin consumption is about 340 tons and approximately 5 tons are consumed and found in Afghanistan. The remaining amounts of heroin, of 375 tons, are trafficked worldwide with routes going into and through the countries neighboring Afghanistan. Although heroin is supplied in America it is not the most smuggled drug. Cocaine in North American is the biggest drug smuggled and sold. Cocaine is mostly transported from Colombia to Mexico or from Central America by sea and then brought on land to the United States and Canada. Cocaine is trafficked to Europe mainly by sea, often in large shipment boats. …show more content…
“The Sentencing Guidelines and Policy Statements of the Sentencing Reform Act (SRA) of 1984 were designed to eliminate sentencing disparities and state explicitly that race, gender, ethnicity, and income should not affect the sentence length. This paper examines the disparities in the sentencing of federal offenders under the SRA of 1984 and analyzes how they are generated.”(Mustard, D. 2001). It is unfortunate that it took until 1984 to make laws against racial discrimination when it comes to sentencing someone for a crime. Now laws are same for everyone, man, woman, African American, Caucasian, etc. There is still a lot to factor in when figuring out the time the offender should have to spend in prison. For example, “Drug distribution or trafficking laws penalize the selling, transportation, and illegal import of unlawful controlled substances, such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, and other illegal drugs.”(Drug trafficking, 2015). The punishment for drug trafficking can vary widely depending on the factors presented such as the type, amount of drugs involved, type of drugs, location of distribution and whether children were targeted for the drug selling. If caught the sentencing can range any where from 3-5 years to life in prison, Drug trafficking and distribution is a felony and is a more serious crime then drug possession. …show more content…
It is time to stop the trafficking of drugs, it will most likely be impossible but drug trafficking can at least be slowed down. Without a rock solid police department and an efficient and honest government the state cannot manage either legal or illegal economies. It is very hard to really crack down on drug trafficking when a lot of the police officers and legal systems are corrupt and they themselves are in on the drug trafficking. What the police should really be worried about is lessening the violence within the gangs, if the violence is less then the people surrounded by the gangs lessening its grip on society, so then it gives the people that live there greater confidence in the government, and it encourages citizen to cooperate with the law enforcement more, and also helping the transformation of a national security threat that has the potential of losing many lives and causing a huge devastation it then turns it into a public safety problem. “An appropriate anti-crime response is a multifaceted state-building effort that seeks to strengthen the bonds between the state and marginalized communities dependent on or vulnerable to participation in illicit economies. Efforts need to focus on ensuring that communities will obey laws – by increasing the likelihood that illegal behavior and corruption will
