El de los Muertos (day of the dead) is a day to remember and celebrate and prepare food for the dead. In Mexico the streets near cemeteries are filled with people and decorated with flowers and candy Calaveras. It is believed that the spirits of the dead visit their families on October 31st and leave on November 2nd. Traditions for El de los Muertos is the ofrendas, or alters made of offerings. The alters honor the dead to assure the continuity of life. In the Mexican tradition, those who are dead provide the necessary protection between the living, god, & the saints. The preparation for this important celebration begins on the last week of October when all is readied for a great feast after the October 31st visit to friends & relatives
