When an elderly person is left alone anything can happen, they can fall and break their frail bones or they can be isolated and not be given the proper nutrition that can lead to significant and noticeable weight loss. Physical elder abuse is a non-accidental use of force against an elderly person. Such abuse includes not only physical assaults such as hitting or shoving but the inappropriate use of drugs, restraints, or confinement. This type of neglect and abuse is also rarely reported, mostly because of the shame that is attached to it. Caregiver neglect can also occur because of dementia, this mental state of an elderly person can at times prevent the individual from communicating their needs and the caregiver may be unable to understand
