Erikson’s fifth stage, identity formation, is largely dependent upon successful resolution of preceding stages; thus, identity, too, largely depends on parents, siblings, and society. Not to mention, when Erikson recorded his observations nearly six decades ago, families, schools, and adolescent social structures were completely different from those today. In the 1950’s, most children lived with both of their biological parents which was considered to be the most common family system. Compared to now, six decades later the family system has drastically changed from the traditional structure into different variations such as single, step, cohabiting, and gay/lesbian couples. It’s essential for parents to establish healthy relations with their
