The confederate flag, a flag born from the 1860’s civil war in the United states of America. The war was between the northern states and the southern states and the confederate flag was representative symbol of the southern states. The Confederate states of America was formed in 1861 when the six seceded states (South Carolina being the first state to secede) met in Montgomery, Alabama. It is interesting to note that the flag wasn’t initially called “stars and bars” or “Confederate flag”, in fact it was called “The battle of the Virginia Army”. The Confederates fought the war to protect slavery since it was significant to the southern states while the Union wanted to emancipate slavery. The war outburst first when the confederates bombarded the union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on 12th April, 1861. The Union army were known to have about 2 million soldiers while the confederates had only about 800,000 soldiers. Even after the union army outnumbered confederate’s army, the confederates fought for 4 years until they surrendered in 1865. The war consisted of 50 major battle and over 5000 minor battles that led to a loss of 620,000 lives. The flag has been recreated three times due its high resemblance to the union flags which, at times, led the troops target their own units. This civil war makes the confederate flag symbolic of a fight for freedom for many. The main cause of the war, slavery, brought up strong emotions of break out by the blacks who were the victims of labor abuse. They stood strong in support of the union to breakout from their terrible state. Hence, this gives the confederate flag an extra meaning.
