Curley's wife in Of Mice and Men is a beautiful young women with much potential that is frowned upon due to her personality. She is characterized as a carefree character who doesn't care about the difference between women and men. Characterization is how an author portrays cox a character in a book directly and indirectly. Curley's Wife is indirectly characterized as carefree because of her actions. Back then women were supposed to stay in the house and only talk to their husbands, but she doesn't mind going around talking to the other men causing conflict. "Curley's Wife laughed. 'O.K., Machine. I'll talk to you later. I like machines'" (Steinbeck 80).This shows that she flirts and is sarcastic without caring what that result will be. A conflict is a problem is the storyline and there can be more than one. There are four types of conflicts: man vs. man, man vs. himself, man vs. society, man vs. nature. A big conflict with Curley's Wife was her and the society. The society of the farm judges her because she doesn't just talk to her husband; they think she is a tart. ("A Girl Being Pointed At"). In this picture it shows how people judge how she handles her self and her life choices and morals. Back in the '20s wives were only supposed to talk to their husbands and other girls or it was considered being a tart. Since Curley's Wife is the only girl on the ranch she talks to the other men but they don't talk back. They ignore her and then they talk about her behind her back. "'Yeah?
